W. Somerville was born in N.S.W., trained as a blacksmith, joined Amalgamated Society of Engineers and retained membership of the Union throughout his life. He came to W.A. in 1895 and became prominent in Labor circles. He was appointed Employees Representative on State Arbitration Court and became actively associated with arbitration matters.
